AnythingLLM
Chat with your documents using any LLM, with agents, multi-user control and a developer API.
AnythingLLM is an app for chatting with your own documents through workspaces, with built-in agents, an agent flow builder and MCP client support. It runs as a desktop app or a Docker server and works with many LLM, embedding and vector database providers. The server ships a Swagger-documented developer API with API-key auth.
- you want a private chat-with-your-documents server for a small team with per-user access
- you want your own code to create workspaces, load documents and ask questions through a keyed API
- No official MCP server: AnythingLLM is an MCP client. Reach for an agent is the REST API
- API keys have no scopes: any valid key reaches every /v1 route, admin and system routes included
- Multi-user mode, white-labeling and the embed widget are Docker only per the README
- Custom agent skills are not available on AnythingLLM Cloud
- Desktop is free, but its Magic features have a daily limit that an optional Pro subscription removes
- Telemetry is on by default; set DISABLE_TELEMETRY to true to opt out
- The Docker run command needs --cap-add SYS_ADMIN

Config only12 things to editadmin-ui surface
server/.env.example and docker/.env.example pick the LLM, embedding and vector database providers and their keys, plus password rules, SSO flags and agent limits. Branding is set in the admin UI, and workspace prompts are set in the UI or through the API, so both live in the database. Agent flows are JSON files under plugins/agent-flows in the storage directory, normally built in the UI. Custom agent skills are folders with plugin.json and handler.js under plugins/agent-skills; they need Node code and hot-load.

Operable: what an agent can drive
Interface
OfficialAPIpublished by the builderlocal
How an agent can drive an Operable Listing, in five levels: native (built for the agent as the primary interface), official (the Builder ships an agent interface), wrapped (a third party wraps the software's API), config (an agent can only drive it by editing files), gui (screen control only). An interface is official only when it is published by the same organization that ships the software. GUI-level Listings are allowed and sorted last.
Reach
Partial coverage. 9 of 10 jobs reachable through the stated interface.
| Job | Through the interface | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Create and manage workspaces | Reachable | REST POST /api/v1/workspace/new, GET /api/v1/workspaces, POST /api/v1/workspace/:slug/update, DELETE /api/v1/workspace/:slug |
| Upload documents, links and raw text | Reachable | REST POST /api/v1/document/upload, /document/upload-link, /document/raw-text |
| Organize document folders | Reachable | REST POST /api/v1/document/create-folder, /document/move-files, DELETE /document/remove-folder |
| Embed documents into a workspace | Reachable | REST POST /api/v1/workspace/:slug/update-embeddings |
| Chat with a workspace | Reachable | REST POST /api/v1/workspace/:slug/chat and /stream-chat; OpenAI-compatible routes under /api/v1/openai |
| Chat threads | Reachable | REST POST /api/v1/workspace/:slug/thread/new and /thread/:threadSlug/chat |
| Vector search without an LLM answer | Reachable | REST POST /api/v1/workspace/:slug/vector-search |
| Manage users and invites (multi-user mode) | Reachable | REST /api/v1/admin/users, /api/v1/admin/invite/new; Swagger notes say these stay off until multi-user mode is turned on in the UI |
| Manage embed chat widgets and MCP servers | Reachable | REST /api/v1/embed/new and /api/v1/mcp-servers/new, plus update and delete routes |
| Build agent flows and custom agent skills | Not reachable | No /v1 route for flows or skills. server/endpoints/agentFlows.js uses the browser session (validatedRequest), not an API key. Flows are JSON files under STORAGE_DIR/plugins/agent-flows |

Open questions
- Do Cloud plans expose the same /api/docs API? Neither the pricing page nor the API docs say, so interface.hosted is local
- What does the Desktop Pro subscription cost? anythingllm.com/alternatives/lm-studio shows no price
