NoteDiscovery
Self-hosted markdown knowledge base with search, graph view and a built-in MCP server.
NoteDiscovery is a lightweight note app that stores plain markdown files in folders, with search, tags, backlinks, a graph view, templates, themes and plugins. It ships an MCP server in the same repo, usable over stdio or at /mcp over Streamable HTTP, plus a REST API with Swagger docs.
Alternative to Notion, Evernote
- you want a markdown notebook on your own server that your agent can search, append to and reorganize
- you want a personal Notion or Evernote replacement where every note is a plain file
- The /mcp endpoint is off by default; the stdio server needs no flag. Set MCP_ENABLED=true for /mcp, plus an API key when authentication is on
- The stdio MCP server calls the REST API, so NOTEDISCOVERY_URL must reach a running instance
- Login is one shared password for a single user: no accounts, no live collaboration and no databases, so it replaces Notion only for personal notes
- Authentication is off by default and the default password is admin; change both before exposing the server
- MCP.md says pip install notediscovery, but that package is not on PyPI; use Docker or install from source
- The project is about one year old (repo created 2025-11-05)

Operable: what an agent can drive
Interface
OfficialMCP serverpublished by the builderremote or local
How an agent can drive an Operable Listing, in five levels: native (built for the agent as the primary interface), official (the Builder ships an agent interface), wrapped (a third party wraps the software's API), config (an agent can only drive it by editing files), gui (screen control only). An interface is official only when it is published by the same organization that ships the software. GUI-level Listings are allowed and sorted last.
Reach
Partial coverage. 7 of 10 jobs reachable through the stated interface.

|---|---|---|
| Search and read notes | Reachable | MCP tools search_notes, list_notes, get_note, get_recent_notes |
| Create and update notes | Reachable | MCP tools create_note, edit_note |
| Append to a note such as a journal | Reachable | MCP tool append_to_note |
