How do I build an app with AI? Call your mother.

November 4, 2026

Check whether the app already exists. If it doesn't, describe it to an AI app builder for a fast first version, or work with a coding agent for more control. Either way, check who can see your data before real people use it.

Does the app already exist?

A generated app starts with no users and no bug reports. A lot of what people ask AI to build is already out there, with public code you can read and change.

Search the directory by the product you would replace. 115 of our 129 listings name the products they are an alternative to. If you use a coding agent, ask it directly:

/mothermachine <what you need>

Which AI app builder should you try?

A builder takes a plain-language description and writes the app for you. You don't need to read the code. These descriptions come from each company's own pages.

Google Stitch is a design tool, not an app builder. It turns prompts and sketches into screens that you can take to Figma or into code.

What if you want more control?

Use a coding agent. Claude Code and Cursor write code in your own repo, so you can change anything. You also take on the hosting, the database, and the upkeep that a builder would handle.

You can plan in a chat tool such as Claude or ChatGPT, then build in your editor. Our post on using agents to build apps covers how to get good work from one.

For Apple apps, Rork Max sits between the two paths. It says it builds SwiftUI apps in your browser, compiles them on cloud Macs, streams a simulator to your screen, and submits to the App Store.

How do you build your first version?

  1. Write down what the app does. Andrew Ng's Build with Andrew course breaks a first prompt into five parts: goal, input, layout, features, and output.
  2. Generate it. Paste your description into a builder and let it run.
  3. Test it and ask for changes. Say what is wrong in plain words, such as "Add a Delete button next to each task." You don't need to touch the code.
  4. Check it. Go through the list in the next section before you share it.
  5. Publish it. Use the builder's own hosting, or export the code and host it yourself.

What should you check before people use it?

Frequently asked questions

How do I build an app with AI?

Check whether the app already exists. If it doesn't, describe it to an AI app builder, test what it makes, and ask for changes. Check who can see your data before you publish.

Do I need to know how to code?

Not for a first version. A builder writes the code for you. You still need to test the app and check who can see its data.

What is the difference between an AI app builder and a coding agent?

A builder writes the app and usually hosts it for you. A coding agent writes code in your own repo, and you handle the hosting and the database.

What is vibe coding?

Describing what you want to an AI model and letting it write the code. You judge the result by using the app, not by reading the code.

What should my first prompt include?

The goal, what the user puts in, the layout, the features, and what the app produces. That is the outline from Andrew Ng's Build with Andrew course.

Can I host an AI-built app for free?

Often, while it is small. Replit and Base44 both advertise free hosting. Vercel's free plan is for personal, non-commercial use, and GitHub Pages hosts static sites only.

Can I take my app with me if I leave a builder?

It depends on the builder. Google AI Studio offers a ZIP download and GitHub sync. Check before you commit, and ask whether your data comes with the code.

How do I find out whether an app already exists?

Search the directory by the product you would replace, or install the skill and ask your agent. For agents has the commands.
